Very often we hear comments such as: ‘Why do I need a Website? I’m doing reasonably OK at the moment and have my regular customers. Besides, I don’t really understand computers and the Internet that much… and I don’t think I can afford the time and money anyway to run one of these Websites…’
Recent research has shown that regional businesses are far less likely to have a professional Website than their city counterparts. The advice from Pro Site Please owner Adam Broadbent is: Don’t be left out. Create a professional online image to your customers – now.
“It doesn’t cost a packet and we can make it easy for you,” says Adam. “I have been working with a few local companies to develop a number of ‘state of the art’ online solutions at a price that should have been available to our community years ago. If your company does not have a professional online presence, you are missing out on a market that has annual sales of over $20 billion dollars in Australia alone. So, imagine what it could do for your business worldwide.”
The NBN and this area
Tamworth and Armidale will be connected to high-speed broadband under the first stage of the Federal Government’s fibre optic rollout plan for the National Broadband Network (NBN). So far we’ve posted about getting your business a directory listing and the importance of a CMS based websites for small business owners that need an easy to access system. Now, we’re on the way to a website launch and need to be ready for the big day.
This article represents a non-exhaustive list of things to do for your launch. Much of this requires some organisation prior to your launch so allow for some planning and processing time.
Without further ado here are 10 step to consider for your launch:
1. Understand your relationship with your web provider
If you’ve followed our previous advice you should have a CMS based website. Make sure you are confident in editing the content of your page and understand who you can contact if you have issues. If applicable, how much will it cost you to have someone fix the bugs on your website?
2. Make sure your everything is up-to-date
Make sure all your media is current! This cannot be stressed enough. Nothing could be more detrimental for your launch than not having your website listed on your business card, electronic signatures, and voice mail messages. This should be sorted well before your launch as having these materials organised takes time (especially printing business cards). If your email signature reflects that your website is new it can generate interest from your customers. If you have a electronic signature that you use for forums, make sure it mentions your website. Not only will this allow people visiting those forums to access your website but will also help your SEO. In the same vein make sure your voice mail message mentions your website. The more you mention your website the more likely it is to be visited.
3. Create a newsletter
This can inform your list and customers about your website and start to generate traffic. It’s also nice to mention your web provider, recognition is always welcome.
Google alerts allows you to get notifications about your business being mentioned online. By creating alerts for your business and domain name you get to understand your web presence. Get in contact with those who mention you and thank them. After all, they’re helping your SEO for free.
5. Get feedback!
Organise for your customers to check out your website and ask for feedback. Often they can pick up on features you overlooked and improve your website. Aside from asking for feedback from your customers, post your website on community review forums such as the Flying Solo Small Business Forum. This not only allows you to provide another link to your website which can increase traffic, but allows for constructive criticism.
6. Get your web developer to provide a link to your website
By having a link to your website on your web developers site it can help you get indexed on Google faster. If you submit your site to Google it can take over a month for it to be indexed. Through having a link on our web developers site it can happen in as little as a day!
Web developers will asometimes allow you to post a testimonial on their site e.g. Pro Site Please. Ask for them to link back to your website as this also assists your SEO
7. Get your site listed
A list of 7 Free listing directories has been addressed in one of our previous blogs so there is no excuse! This helps develop your SEO and did I mention its free?
8. Mention your website
When talking to people about your business mention your website. Alongside mentioning how great business is going ask them to check out your brand new website!
9. Consider a press release
If your website could be considered newsworthy a press release will allow for it to be picked up by the PR syndication services and increase public knowledge of your company. Even if its not published in major press it can be re-blogged and tweeted which increases your coverage.
10. Implement your marketing plan
Your business will sadly not sell itself. Hopefully you have devised a marketing plan and now is the time to implement it.
To summarise, what you want to do is increase your online presence. By going through these step you are increasing the amount of relevant traffic to your site and engaging a broader audience. If you have any other suggestions feel free to contact us or leave a comment.
I had a client this week who had unfortunately bought (less than a year ago) an ecommerce website that did not have a CMS. If she wanted to make the slightest of changes to the site, she emailed them to the website developer who coded them in and charged accordingly.
In the world of website design, CMS means Content Management System. Basically its a hidden website that allows you to make changes to a website’s content by using something similar to a word processor (See Photo). You can upload images; edit website text or even change your website layout with little to no technical knowledge.
So why would you use anything else? It’s cheaper because you don’t have to pay for a developer to make content changes, it’s easy to customise, easy to use and easy to upgrade.
If your website doesn’t have a CMS or you’r about to embark on an online venture, make sure a CMS is something at the top of your requests. CATCH-UP WEB DEVELOPERS – IMHO
